Best Homeschool Quotes for Moms

Even though we just started our twenty first year of homeschooling, it is still easy to get off track and get discouraged. These homeschool quotes always seem to restore my focus and help encourage me that I’m doing the right thing educating my children at home.

I hope these homeschool quotes help inspire you to get started with homeschooling or to keep going. It’s the best decision we have ever made! When (notice I said WHEN) you get discouraged or worried that you are “ruining” your children, come back to these quotes and read them carefully. You are on the right track!

My Favorite Homeschool Quotes Ever:

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”  William Butler Yeats

“It is the duty of a citizen in a free country not to fit into society, but to make society.” John Holt

“Children may be more capable of competent self-directed learning than we give them credit for…” John Holt

“Self-education is the only possible education; the rest is mere veneer laid on the surface of a child’s nature.” Charlotte M. Mason

“All men who have turned out worth anything have had the chief hand in their own education.” Walter Scott

“I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” Mark Twain

“School is the advertising agency which makes you believe that you need the society as it is.” Ivan Illich

“Don’t worry about socialization. Wherever people congregate, there is going to be interaction, socialization.” Where is it written that it needs to be in schools?  Mary Kay Clark

“The first real lesson I learned as a homeschool teacher is that … it’s the students that lead the way.” Patti Armstrong

“When one teaches, two learn.” Robert Heinlein

Pay attention to these quotes too:

“You will not reap the fruit of individuality in your children if you clone their education.” Marilyn Howshall

“Children learn from anything and everything they see. They learn wherever they are, not just in special learning places.”
― John Holt, Learning All The Time

“[Homeschooling]…recipe for genius: More of family and less of school, more of parents and less of peers, more creative freedom and less formal lessons.” Raymond S. Moore

“Any child who can spend an hour or two a day, or more if he wants, with adults that he likes, who are interested in the world and like to talk about it, will on most days learn far more from their talk than he would learn in a week of school.” John Holt

“Education is every day and everywhere, the only thing you have to pay is attention.” Tim Fargo

“Successful teaching is not head-to-head; it is heart-to-heart.” Tamara L. Chilver
